Perspective

Before infertility, I had a limited view of others going through a difficult time. I am ashamed to admit but my thought pattern was something like this... "what's the big deal, it will all work out in the long run."  For two reasons: 1) I had never gone through a true struggle and could not empathize or even really sympathize. 2) I was very selfish and didn't want to see past my own petty problems.  Recently, I have reflected on all the times I was desperately lacking in the sympathy department.

My sister went through a VERY difficult pregnancy and delivered preemie twin girls.  Her journey makes my infertility look like a "walk in the park".  I was not there for her like I should have been.  She was on bed rest in the hospital for months and I only visited her once.  I was even irritated by how much attention she was getting.  For my sister, this was VERY UNWANTED attention. I didn't care.  I was unable  not willing to opening my eyes and see the big picture, take a step back and realize she needed my love and support. Well, God decided I needed a little wake up call...

One day, I began thinking about all the hardships people in my life have gone through or are going through...  losing a parent, my sister's pregnancy, saying goodbye to a best friend, having a sick family member, losing a job, losing a child, etc.  I remember thinking, "wow... Rachel you really suck and need to work on showing others more support."  I started grieving for those loved ones who had gone through a rough time even though their time of pain had been years ago.  I decided I needed to act.  I called my precious sister to ask her for forgiveness.  I told her how sorry I was for not being present during the most difficult time in her life.  I revealed that if I could do it over again, I would have handled things differently.  What was the cause and effect to allow me to have this new perspective on her struggle? I explained that our walk through infertility had opened my eyes to see the bigger picture.  It's not all about me.

I wish I could snap my fingers and make all my pain go away and wake up with a tiny baby in my arms but that would be WAY TOO EASY. Right now, I must hurt to grow as a person, sister, friend, wife and daughter.  Infertility is my struggle.  It's my turn to walk through the trenches.  BUT our journey is not all pain and no gain.  I've gained a new pair of eyes, a softer heart, and longer arms to reach out to others. If God gave me the option to have a child right now but in return I would lose all the lessons I've learned, I would have to say no way dude!  To all my friends and family who have struggled and I was not there for you... I am deeply sorry.  The next time I promise to hug a little longer and pray a little harder.  God thank you for this new perspective.

On a side note... I have decided to no longer keep my blog setting on private.  So my one reader, my mom, can add this on her Google reader account.  I ask that you please do not share this link with others.  I want to keep my blog as private as possible. Spanks!

Wait

I think everyone has had a time in their life when they are frustrated with God either not answering prayers or not answering them the way you think he should.  I know I have!!  Our church did a series on frustrated faith and it was a defining moment.

I must remember every "yes" and every "no" is God telling me he loves me.  Jeremy and I have hope he will give us babies one day but more importantly, we have faith he will carry us through this journey.  It's been 22 months now and he hasn't let go of me yet!

Wait
by Russell Kelfer

Desperately, helplessly, longingly, I cried;
Quietly, patiently, lovingly, God replied.
I pled and I wept for a clue to my fate . . .
And the Master so gently said, "Wait."

"Wait? you say wait?" my indignant reply.
"Lord, I need answers, I need to know why!
Is your hand shortened? Or have you not heard?
By faith I have asked, and I'm claiming your Word.

"My future and all to which I relate
Hangs in the balance, and you tell me to wait?
I'm needing a 'yes', a go-ahead sign,
Or even a 'no' to which I can resign.

"You promised, dear Lord, that if we believe,
We need but to ask, and we shall receive.
And Lord I've been asking, and this is my cry:
I'm weary of asking! I need a reply."

Then quietly, softly, I learned of my fate,
As my Master replied again, "Wait."
So I slumped in my chair, defeated and taut,
And grumbled to God, "So, I'm waiting for what?"

He seemed then to kneel, and His eyes met with mine . . .
and He tenderly said, "I could give you a sign.
I could shake the heavens and darken the sun.
I could raise the dead and cause mountains to run.

"I could give all you seek and pleased you would be.
You'd have what you want, but you wouldn't know Me.
You'd not know the depth of my love for each saint.
You'd not know the power that I give to the faint.

"You'd not learn to see through clouds of despair;
You'd not learn to trust just by knowing I'm there.
You'd not know the joy of resting in Me
When darkness and silence are all you can see.

"You'd never experience the fullness of love
When the peace of My spirit descends like a dove.
You would know that I give, and I save, for a start,
But you'd not know the depth of the beat of My heart.

"The glow of my comfort late into the night,
The faith that I give when you walk without sight.
The depth that's beyond getting just what you ask
From an infinite God who makes what you have last.

"You'd never know, should your pain quickly flee,
What it means that My grace is sufficient for thee.
Yes, your dearest dreams overnight would come true,
But, oh, the loss, if you missed what I'm doing in you.

"So, be silent, my child, and in time you will see
That the greatest of gifts is to truly know me.
And though oft My answers seem terribly late,
My most precious answer of all is still . . . Wait."

First post...

This is my first post on my new blog.  I am so excited!  I have been reading blogs for over a year now and they are such a wonderful way to update your closest friends and family.  I have so much to say I don't know where to start...

Tomorrow is the first step of MANY.  Jeremy and I will begin our IVF journey!  I have my consultation for acupuncture.  I will be pumping my body with so many drugs I figure a little natural medicine is a good thing. Right?!?!  I am not nervous about acupuncture.  I never thought I would be able to give myself shots and I am a pro at that now.  I am not such a big baby anymore! Ha

I have heard that IVF will change you forever. God, we thank you SO MUCH for this opportunity.  Of course, we pray for a tiny miracle but just to be able to do this treatment is a huge blessing.  I pray Jeremy and I continue to grow in our faith.  Thank you so much for my sweet Jeremy!!!  He will be the best daddy.  He has had to deal with me and my hormones for the past year (God bless him). You have already blessed me more than most people by giving me Jeremy when our family started on June 6th 2008.  Thank you!
